AN ENGLISH LESSON AS AN EFFICIENT MEANS TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ TRANSFERABLE SKILLS *

Аннотация:
an English lesson serves as an efficient means to enhance students’ transferable skills, including communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. By engaging in various activities that require them to communicate effectively, think critically and creatively, and collaborate with others, students develop the skills that are essential for success in the ever-evolving and competitive job market. The current value of transferable skills is due to the fact that most employers value such skills in their employees.

The term “transferable skills” refers to the skills and abilities that can be applied by people in various contexts including professional ones, allowing individuals to be productive in diverse settings [1]. In the context of education, there is a growing recognition of the significance of equipping students with transferable skills to prepare them for the dynamic and competitive labor market. English language learning offers an excellent opportunity to enhance students’ transferable skills, as it requires the development of a variety of cognitive, communicative, and critical thinking abilities. One of the key transferable skills that students can develop through English language learning is communication skills. In an English lesson, students engage in activities such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing, which require them to effectively convey their ideas and thoughts to others. Through group discussions, debates, and presentations, students learn how to articulate their arguments coherently, listen actively to their peers, and engage in constructive dialogue. These communication skills are essential in various professional contexts, such as team meetings, client presentations, and negotiations, where effective communication is crucial for building relationships and achieving goals [2].English language learning also helps students to enhance their critical thinking skills, which are essential for problem-solving and decision-making in the workplace. By analyzing and interpreting literary texts, students learn to evaluate different perspectives, draw logical conclusions, and develop sound arguments. They also learn to identify biases, assess the credibility of sources, and make informed judgments. These critical thinking skills are invaluable in roles that require complex decision-making, such as project management, strategic planning, and policy development [3].Considering critical thinking, it is also observed that it is essential even in daily activities unrelated to study or work. This is due to the fact that almost every day a person encounters situations in which he or she needs to conduct some kind of analysis, compare some points and form his or her own opinion [4].In addition to communication and critical thinking skills, English language learning can also cultivate students’ creativity and innovation. Through activities such as creative writing, storytelling, and role-playing, students are encouraged to think imaginatively, express themselves artistically, and explore new ideas. This creativity and innovation are essential in roles that involve problem-solving, product development, and marketing, where innovative solutions and fresh perspectives are highly valued.English language learning promotes collaboration and teamwork among students, as they work together to achieve common goals and objectives. By participating in group projects, debates, and presentations, students learn to share responsibilities, communicate effectively with others, and contribute their unique skills and perspectives. These collaboration and teamwork skills are essential in diverse professions, such as healthcare, education, and business, where working collaboratively with colleagues and clients is essential for achieving success [4].The problem of the formation of transferable skills is extremly relevant. Due to the fact that skills form the basis of any professional training, special attention should be paid to their development and improvement. Therefore, educators should continue to prioritize the development of transferable skills through English language learning to empower students to thrive in their future professional endeavors.
