METHODS OF TEACHING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Abstract: language pedagogy is the discipline concerned with the theories and techniques of teaching language. It has been described as a type of teaching wherein the teacher draws from their own prior knowledge and actual experience in teaching language. The approach is distinguished from research-based methodologies. There are several methods in language pedagogy but they can be classified into three: structural, functional, and interactive. Each of these encompasses a number of methods that can be utilised in order to teach and learn languages.

Keywords: method, foreign languages, teaching, learning, students, useful.

Games, songs, revision and consolidation activities usually involve some form of drill and rote learning as well. However, while rote and drill activities persist today, they go by different names and have evolved tremendously from their predecessors. Traditional education is the study of culture, traditions, and customs, while modern education teaches students to improve their skills. In traditional teaching methods, students learn through memorization skills, while in modern education systems, students learn through human-environment interaction. Traditional Teacher speaks with authority and imposes rules to be followed, Modern Teacher speaks with compassion and allows students to be proactive in decision making. Traditional Teacher is strict and by the book approach, Modern Teacher is considerate BUT makes the student realize the pros and cons of every action. Communicative language teaching is perhaps the most popular approach among the methods of teaching ESL today. CLT emphasizes the student's ability to communicate in real-life contexts. As a result, students learn to make requests, accept offers, explain things, and express their feelings and preferences. The audio-lingual method or Army Method is a method used in teaching foreign languages. It is based on behaviorist theory, which postulates that certain traits of living things, and in this case humans, could be trained through a system of reinforcement. The correct use of a trait would receive positive feedback while incorrect use of that trait would receive negative feedback. This approach to language learning was similar to another, earlier method called the direct method. Like the direct method, the audio-lingual method advised that students should be taught a language directly, without using the students' native language to explain new words or grammar in target language. However, unlike the direct method, the audio-lingual method did not focus on teaching vocabulary. Rather, the teacher drilled students in the use of grammar.

Applied to language instruction, and often within the context of the language lab, it means that the instructor would present the correct model of a sentence and the students would have to repeat it. The teacher would then continue by presenting new words for the students to sample in the same structure. In audio-lingualism, there is no explicit grammar instruction: everything is simply memorized in form. There are plenty of characteristics that a teacher must possess to be a good language teacher; along with proficiency in a language, extraordinary reading, speaking and listening skills the teacher must, of course, demonstrate good use of vocabulary and command over the words. Some of the essential teaching skills are objective formations, introduction of lesson, questioning, probing questions, reinforcement, explaining, illustration with example, blackboard utilization, stimulus variation, classroom managements and closure. With the right teaching skills, you can create an environment where your students can thrive and fulfil their potential. You'll be equipped with everything you need to make your classes engaging, productive, and fun for everyone. Let's be honest; No one wants to be bored to death trying to learn something new. Schools can teach students how to communicate clearly, listen actively, and express themselves confidently. 2. Critical thinking: The ability to think critically and solve problems is important in all areas of life. Schools can teach students how to analyse information, make reasoned decisions, and evaluate evidence. With the rise of digital learning, traditional methods have become outdated, and teachers must constantly find new and innovative ways to keep their students engaged and motivated. To do this, they need to tap into their inner entrepreneur and harness skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. A more recent teaching approach for the acquisition of procedural skills was presented by Walker and Peyton. Peyton's teaching approach is a stepwise teaching approach and consists of the following four steps: demonstration, deconstruction, comprehension and performance. "Soft skills” refer to non-technical abilities that include communication, leadership, teamwork, self-awareness, empathy, and emotional intelligence. These essential soft skills for teachers are often overlooked in schools, but they are vital for teachers to succeed. As an educator, communication skills are an important requirement of your job. Effective communication benefits everyone. It helps improve relationships, increase understanding, and model positive interactions.
